Clay Basics:


Kiln: a special oven that heats to high temperatures (around 2000 degrees F!!), in order to bake the CLAY.

Clay can be made into beautiful pottery and other ceramic creations. But it must go through the 6 stages, to get to the final product!
WORKING WITH CLAY!
sTEP 1: sET UP YOUR WORKSPACE.


sTEP 2: scratch, water, wiggle
Following these steps will make sure your clay piece does not fall apart through the Drying and firing process!

#1: SCRATCH
uSE YOUR PLASTIC FORK TO SCRATCH THE SURFACE OF YOUR CLAY BEFORE ADDING THE OBJECT YOU WANT TO ATTACH
#2: WATER
Use your finger to put water over the area you scratched, so that it is a little wet.
#3: WIGGLE
Wiggle the piece of clay onto the scratched and watered clay, to attach the two pieces. It should not be able to fall off!
sTEP 3: STORE YOUR CLAY PROJECT
IF you finished your clay project, leave it out to dry. If not... You must properly store it so that it does not dry out!

Why is clay important to North carolina?


Clay is the official art medium of the State of North Carolina.
The soil in NC is clay-rich. People have been making pottery in this region since the time of the Native Americans and early European settlers.
Clay has been used in a functional way- such as bowls and plates for eating.

What is clay?

Clay is a material from the earth. It is the result of weathering through rocks.

Weathering is a natural process that slowly breaks apart or changes rock.
It is considered clay if it has Plasticity, which means that you can bend it and form it into different shapes.
